Sun protection for babies and children
Share
Summer brings so much joy – sunshine, outdoor fun, and happy family moments. But with the sun also comes the need to protect delicate skin from harmful UV rays. Children's skin, especially babies', is thinner and more sensitive than adults’, making proper sun protection essential from day one.
On this page, we’ll walk you through how to safely and easily protect your little ones from the sun – whether you’re out for a stroll or on a beach holiday.
Why does children's skin need extra protection from the sun?
Children’s skin doesn’t produce as much melanin as adult skin, making it more vulnerable to sunburn. In fact, sunburns in childhood significantly increase the risk of developing skin cancer later in life.
Babies, in particular, haven’t yet developed a fully functioning sweat response, so they can’t cool themselves as efficiently, which also increases the risk of overheating.
Shade and clothing come first
Babies under 1 year old should not be exposed to direct sunlight at all. The best protection is keeping them in the shade and dressing them in light, long-sleeved clothing that covers the skin but remains breathable. Don’t forget a wide-brimmed hat! It shields the head, neck, and face – areas most exposed to the sun.
👉Tip: UV-protective clothing is a great choice for beach days and water play.
Sunscreen for babies - when and how to use it?
Once your child is over 6 months old and exposed to the sun, sunscreen is recommended. For babies under 6 months, direct sun exposure should be avoided altogether, and sunscreen is generally not advised due to their sensitive skin.
When choosing sunscreen for your child, look for:
- Sunscreens with mineral (physical) UV filters (zinc oxide and titanium dioxide) that remain on the skin's surface and do not penetrate it. These filters work by absorbing most UV radiation and converting it into heat, but also reflecting some of it.
- SPF 30 or preferably SPF 50: A high SPF is crucial for children.
- Fragrance-free and allergy-tested: The simpler the formula, the better for sensitive skin.
- Regardless of which product you choose, remember to apply it generously to ensure you get the protection it promises. Although sunscreen mainly starts to work immediately after application, it's good to apply it on your little one before heading outside, not while you're there. Don’t forget to reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating.
Sunglasses aren’t just for grown-ups 😎
Children’s eyes are also sensitive to UV radiation. Choose high-quality kids’ sunglasses with 100% UV protection. Soft, comfortable frames help ensure they stay on even during active play.
More practical sun safety tips
- Avoid outdoor play during peak sun hours from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- Offer water frequently – for babies, this means regular breastfeeding or formula feeding.
- If, despite your best efforts to protect your little one’s skin, you notice some redness after a day spent outdoors, you can gently apply our Gentle Cleansing & Moisturizing Cream. Tip: Keep one bottle in the fridge — it gives the skin a lovely cooling sensation at the same time!
- The best way to remove sunscreen from the skin in the shower is to use oil. Baby Caring & Cleansing Oil works wonderfully for a post-sunny-day shower moment.
Sunny days are some of the best childhood memories – as long as we take a few simple precautions. With proper sun protection, outdoor adventures stay safe and enjoyable for the whole family!
